How Does Horsemen Work? A Plain, Ingredient-by-Ingredient Look
Horsemen works through 9 ingredients sharing one 1,000 mg blend, taken as 2 capsules a day. Tongkat ali has the strongest human evidence for supporting testosterone and stamina, at 200 to 600 mg a day in trials. The other 8 ingredients have weaker or unrelated evidence, mostly for weight or blood sugar. Because amounts are not published, no one can confirm which ingredients reach an active dose inside Horsemen.

What Is Horsemen Actually Trying to Do?
Nine ingredients, one blend, and no fast-acting stimulant on the label.
Horsemen is built around one idea: put several plant and amino-acid ingredients traditionally tied to men's energy and vitality into a single daily blend. It does not work like a fast-acting stimulant. There is no caffeine on the label, and nothing designed to hit within the hour. Instead, the ingredients inside work through slower biological paths, mostly hormonal and metabolic, that research suggests may build over days to months of steady use.
This page explains what the research on each ingredient actually shows, in plain language, and is honest about what stays unknown. For the full ingredient list and dose table, see our ingredients page. For the exact label text, see our supplement facts page.
What Happens After You Take Horsemen, Step by Step?
1. Ingredients reach the gut
After you swallow 2 capsules with water, the gelatin shell breaks down and the blend's 9 ingredients release into the digestive tract, where they are absorbed at different rates and in different amounts, none of them published.
2. Compounds enter the bloodstream
Active compounds, such as tongkat ali's bioactive quassinoids or icariin from horny goat weed, are absorbed into the blood in amounts that depend on dose and on the ingredient's natural bioavailability, which research shows is low for some of these compounds.
3. Effects build with consistent, daily use
Human trials behind ingredients like tongkat ali generally ran for 2 weeks to 6 months of daily use before researchers saw measurable change. This is a slow-building formula, not a same-day one, according to the timelines used in that research.
How Might Tongkat Ali Support Energy and Stamina?
Tongkat Ali Extract (Eurycoma longifolia) has the most human research behind it in this blend, and the clearest proposed mechanism: several trials link it to higher testosterone. A 2022 meta-analysis of clinical trials found it significantly raised serum testosterone, especially in men who started with low levels, across a dose range of roughly 100 to 600 mg a day (Leisegang et al., 2022). A 2-week trial in healthy young men found 600 mg a day produced dose-related testosterone increases, likely through the adrenal stress-hormone pathway rather than the reproductive one (Chan et al., 2021). A 6-month trial pairing 200 mg a day with exercise saw improved erectile function and higher testosterone in about half the men studied (Leitão et al., 2021).
What is unknown: Horsemen does not publish how much tongkat ali is in its blend. If the amount sits well under 200 mg, the ingredient may not reach the range where these trials saw an effect.
What About Horny Goat Weed and Wild Yam?
Horny Goat Weed Extract (Epimedium grandiflorum) is traditionally used for men's vitality. Its main compound, icariin, is thought to relax blood vessels in a way similar to how PDE5-inhibiting drugs work, which is the mechanism a rat study of nerve-injured animals pointed to (Shindel et al., 2010). That mechanism has never been confirmed in a human efficacy trial. The only human trial of icariin tested safety and absorption, not whether it works, and found the compound absorbs poorly from the gut, with side effects appearing at high doses (Brown et al., 2019).
Wild Yam Extract (Dioscorea villosa) is often assumed to raise hormone levels because it contains diosgenin, a compound structurally related to steroid hormones. The body cannot actually convert diosgenin into a usable hormone on its own; that conversion needs a lab process. The one controlled human trial of wild yam, using a topical cream, found no effect on hormone levels versus placebo (Komesaroff et al., 2001). Its proposed mechanism for vitality has not held up in the research that exists.
How Might the Blood-Sugar Ingredients Fit In?
Four ingredients in this blend work, when they work, through metabolic paths tied to blood sugar and weight, not directly to energy or stamina. Their presence here is likely about supporting overall metabolic health rather than a direct stamina mechanism.
Apple Cider Vinegar's acetic acid is thought to slow how fast the stomach empties and blunt the blood-sugar rise after a meal, a mechanism a 2025 meta-analysis linked to improved fasting glucose and HbA1c at higher doses (Arjmandfard et al., 2025). Cinnamon Extract is thought to make cells more sensitive to insulin, a mechanism a meta-analysis of mostly cassia-cinnamon trials linked to modest fasting-glucose drops (Akilen et al., 2012). Bitter Melon Extract contains compounds that appear to act somewhat like insulin, shown in a trial where 2,000 mg a day lowered blood sugar, though less than the drug metformin (Fuangchan et al., 2011). Garcinia Cambogia's hydroxycitric acid is thought to block an enzyme involved in making fat from carbohydrates, though a meta-analysis found this translated to only a small weight difference versus placebo (Onakpoya et al., 2011).
Steadier blood sugar and a lighter metabolic load could plausibly support how energetic someone feels day to day, but none of these 4 trials measured energy or stamina directly. That link is reasonable, not proven.
What Do L-Lysine and Raspberry Ketones Add?
L-Lysine HCL is an essential amino acid used throughout the body to build proteins. Most research on supplemental lysine looks at herpes simplex prevention, not energy, through a mechanism involving competition with another amino acid, arginine. A placebo-controlled trial at 1,000 mg a day found no clear benefit for that use (Milman et al., 1980). No mechanism links lysine directly to stamina or vitality in the research we found.
Raspberry Ketones are thought, from animal research only, to increase the breakdown of stored fat through a hormone-signaling pathway called lipolysis (Morimoto et al., 2005). That mechanism has not been tested in a human trial, so whether it does anything at a supplement dose in people is unknown.
How Does Each Ingredient's Proposed Mechanism Compare?
| Ingredient | Proposed mechanism | Human evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Tongkat Ali | May raise testosterone via adrenal/stress-hormone signaling | Moderate: several RCTs, 100-600 mg/day |
| Horny Goat Weed | Icariin may relax blood vessels like a PDE5 inhibitor | Weak: rat study only; human trial tested safety, not effect |
| Apple Cider Vinegar | Acetic acid may slow stomach emptying, blunt glucose rise | Moderate: RCTs and a meta-analysis, mostly on glucose/weight |
| Cinnamon | May improve insulin sensitivity | Moderate: meta-analysis, mostly cassia cinnamon, not verum |
| Bitter Melon | Compounds may act somewhat like insulin | Moderate: RCTs, lower effect than metformin |
| Garcinia Cambogia | HCA may block an enzyme used to store fat | Weak: small effect in meta-analysis; liver-injury reports exist |
| L-Lysine | Competes with arginine; mechanism unrelated to energy | Weak: tested for cold sores, not energy |
| Wild Yam | Diosgenin resembles steroid hormones but is not converted by the body | Weak: one human trial, no hormone effect found |
| Raspberry Ketones | May increase fat breakdown (lipolysis) | Weak: animal studies only, no human trials |
What Stays Unknown Without Published Amounts?
Every mechanism above depends on dose. Tongkat ali's testosterone effect showed up at 100 to 600 mg a day; horny goat weed's icariin needed up to 840 mg a day just to test safely. Horsemen states only that its 9 ingredients share 1,000 mg total. No public source, lab test, or certificate of analysis breaks that total down by ingredient.
That means this page can explain what the research suggests each ingredient can do at a studied dose. It cannot confirm whether Horsemen's actual capsule reaches those doses for any single ingredient.
For what that means for daily use, see our how to take Horsemen page. For the label claims Horsemen actually makes, rather than what the science implies, see our benefits page.
How It Works: common questions
Does Horsemen work quickly, like a stimulant?
No. There is no caffeine or stimulant on the label. The ingredients with the most research, like tongkat ali, were studied over 2 weeks to 6 months of daily use, not a single dose.
Which ingredient in Horsemen has the strongest research behind it?
Tongkat ali. Multiple trials and a meta-analysis link it to higher testosterone at 100 to 600 mg a day, though Horsemen does not state how much is in its blend.
Can Horsemen boost testosterone?
The label makes no testosterone claim; its stated claims are Energy Support, Vitality Support, and Stamina Support. Tongkat ali, one of 9 ingredients, has research on testosterone at published doses, but Horsemen's own amount is not published.
Why are some ingredients in Horsemen usually sold for weight loss?
Garcinia cambogia, raspberry ketones, apple cider vinegar, bitter melon, and cinnamon are most often studied for weight or blood sugar. Steadier metabolism could plausibly support daily energy, but no trial of these ingredients measured energy directly.
Is there proof Horsemen improves stamina?
No published trial has tested the finished Horsemen formula itself. This page explains research on its individual ingredients at their studied doses, which is different from testing the product as a whole.
Why doesn't Horsemen say how much of each ingredient is in the blend?
It is sold as a proprietary blend, a legal label format that only requires the combined weight, not each ingredient's share, as long as ingredients are listed in descending order by weight.
How long does it take for the ingredients to work?
The human trials behind ingredients like tongkat ali ran for 2 weeks to 6 months before researchers measured a change. Horsemen does not publish its own timeline.
Does horny goat weed have proven effects in people?
Not for sexual or energy effects. The only human trial of its main compound, icariin, tested safety and absorption. Improvement in erectile response has only been shown in a rat study.
