Tongkat Ali Dose Research: What Studies Used, and What a 9-Ingredient Blend Can Fit
Human trials on tongkat ali mostly used 200 to 600 mg a day of standardized root extract, and a 2022 meta-analysis found that range raised testosterone, especially in men who started low. A 1,000 mg blend that packs tongkat ali alongside 8 other ingredients, like Horsemen's Test Boost Blend, does not publish how much of that 1,000 mg is tongkat ali, so you cannot check its share against those doses.

Why Does Tongkat Ali's Dose Matter?
The research on tongkat ali is real. The question is whether a given bottle uses anything close to it.
Tongkat ali (Eurycoma longifolia) is a root from Southeast Asia, and it is the most-studied ingredient in men's vitality blends today. Before you buy a bottle that lists it, the question worth asking is simple: how much did the actual studies use, and does your bottle come close?
This guide walks through the human trials, states their doses plainly, then compares that to a common label format: a 1,000 mg, 9-ingredient proprietary blend like the one on the back of a Horsemen bottle. We use real numbers throughout and cite every study by name.
What Dose Did Tongkat Ali Trials Actually Use?
Three human trials give us the clearest picture of tongkat ali dosing, and they do not all agree on one number. Instead, they trace a range.
The meta-analysis: 100 to 600 mg a day
A 2022 systematic review pooled clinical trials of Eurycoma longifolia and found it raises serum testosterone, with the strongest effect in men who started with low levels. The pooled trials used doses across roughly 100 to 600 mg a day (Leisegang et al., 2022).
The short trial: 600 mg a day for 2 weeks
A randomized trial in healthy young men used 600 mg a day for 2 weeks and found dose-related increases in both total and free testosterone (Chan et al., 2021). Two weeks is short, but the dose response inside that trial (higher intake, bigger change) is a useful data point.
The long trial: 200 mg a day for 6 months, plus exercise
A 6-month randomized trial gave older men with age-related androgen decline 200 mg a day of a standardized extract, paired with an exercise program. About half saw improved erectile function and higher testosterone (Leitão et al., 2021). This is the lowest dose in the group, run the longest, and it was not tested alone; exercise was part of the protocol.
Put together, the working range across this research is 200 to 600 mg a day of standardized tongkat ali extract, taken daily for anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 months.
Why the range is this wide
Part of the spread comes from how each trial's extract was standardized. A tongkat ali extract can be concentrated to different ratios, and some products state a percentage of eurycomanone, the compound most researchers track. None of the trials above used the exact same extract or ratio, so "200 mg" in one study is not guaranteed to match "200 mg" of a different extract on a store shelf. This is also one of the facts most labels, including proprietary blends, do not publish.
What Does Tongkat Ali Do at Those Doses?

Testosterone, mostly in men who start low
The clearest signal across these trials is a rise in testosterone, and it is bigger in men whose baseline levels were already low. Men with normal levels to start saw smaller changes.
Not a stimulant, not fast
None of these trials measured a same-day energy jolt. The shortest trial ran 2 weeks. The benefit, where it showed up, built over weeks to months of daily use, not one dose.
How Does a 1,000 mg, 9-Ingredient Blend Compare?
A shared blend total does not tell you what any one ingredient, including tongkat ali, actually delivers.
Now the comparison. Horsemen lists tongkat ali as one of 9 ingredients inside a single "Test Boost Proprietary Blend," stated at 1,000 mg total per 2-capsule serving. We explain how proprietary blends work on our proprietary blends guide; here we focus on the math.
US label rules let a maker state a blend's combined weight without breaking out each ingredient's share, as long as the ingredients are listed in descending order by weight. That is legal, and it is common. It also means Horsemen's label does not say how many of the 1,000 mg are tongkat ali.
| Comparison point | Research on tongkat ali | Horsemen's Test Boost Blend |
|---|---|---|
| Daily dose used | 200-600 mg a day, standardized extract | not published |
| Ingredient count in the product tested | 1 (tongkat ali alone) | 9 ingredients sharing one blend |
| Total blend weight | n/a - single-ingredient trials | 1,000 mg per 2-capsule serving |
| Even-split share, if all 9 were equal | n/a | about 111 mg average per ingredient |
| Trial length | 2 weeks to 6 months | not applicable - no clinical trial of this blend |
If a 1,000 mg blend split its weight evenly across all 9 named ingredients, each one would average about 111 mg. That is below every dose used in the trials above, including the lowest, 200 mg. Blends rarely split evenly; the label's own descending-order rule means earlier-listed ingredients (L-Lysine HCL, then apple cider vinegar, then garcinia) likely take a larger share than tongkat ali, which sits fourth on the list. We break down every ingredient's place on that list on our Horsemen ingredients page.
Is a Higher Tongkat Ali Dose Safer or Riskier?
Tongkat ali's human trials did not report serious safety problems at 200 to 600 mg a day over their study periods. LiverTox, a US government reference on supplement and drug liver injury, rates it only a possible and rare cause of liver injury, based on a single case report in a bodybuilder that was confounded by likely undisclosed steroid use (LiverTox (National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases), 2023).
Because tongkat ali raises testosterone in the research, anyone on hormone therapy, or with a hormone-sensitive condition, should talk to a doctor before adding it, at any dose. A higher dose is not automatically a bigger benefit either; none of the three trials above tested doses above 600 mg a day, so anything past that point is untested territory, not a proven upgrade. See our full side effects page for more on this and the blend's other ingredients.
What Should You Take Away From This?
- The research range for tongkat ali is 200 to 600 mg a day of standardized extract.
- That range comes from 3 human trials, run 2 weeks to 6 months, not one perfect study.
- Testosterone gains were largest in men who started with low levels.
- Proprietary blends that group tongkat ali with 8 other ingredients rarely publish its individual share.
- A dose below 200 mg has not been shown to match the trial results above.
- Buying by label total weight alone tells you little about any single ingredient inside it.
If dose transparency matters to you, ask any brand directly what share of its blend is tongkat ali, or look for single-ingredient products that state a milligram amount on their own line. For daily habits that support energy without relying on any capsule's dose, see our guide to energy and stamina habits after 40. For a full walkthrough of how Horsemen's own label reads, see our how it works page and supplement facts page.
None of this means a blend with an unpublished tongkat ali amount cannot help. It means you are buying on trust in the maker's formulation, not on a number you can check against the trials above. That is a fair tradeoff for some buyers and not for others, and it is worth knowing which one you are making before you order.
Questions readers ask
What is the minimum effective dose of tongkat ali?
The lowest dose used in a controlled human trial that showed a benefit was 200 mg a day, run for 6 months alongside an exercise program. Doses below 200 mg have not been tested in the trials we reviewed.
Is 600 mg of tongkat ali a day safe?
The trials that used 600 mg a day ran for 2 weeks and did not report serious safety problems in that window. No trial we found tested doses above 600 mg a day, so higher amounts are untested, not proven safer or better.
How much tongkat ali is in Horsemen?
Not published. Tongkat ali is one of 9 ingredients inside Horsemen's 1,000 mg Test Boost Proprietary Blend, and the label states only the blend's combined weight, not any single ingredient's share.
Does tongkat ali work fast, like a stimulant?
No. The shortest trial with a positive result ran 2 weeks of daily use, and the longest ran 6 months. None of the trials measured a same-day energy effect, and tongkat ali is not a stimulant.
Does tongkat ali raise testosterone in every man who takes it?
No. The 2022 meta-analysis found the biggest increases in men who started with low testosterone. Men with already-normal levels showed smaller changes in the pooled trials.
Can I compare tongkat ali doses across different brands?
Only if the brand states tongkat ali's individual milligram amount outside a proprietary blend. When it sits inside a blend with other ingredients and only the blend's total weight is published, there is no way to check its share against the research doses above.
